Drawing a Fine Line

Who knew a modelling class would change my life? Not because of a globetrotting career but because it helped me create my signature look: black liner a la Angelina Jolie.

Toronto-based makeup artist Lisa Aharon, who has worked backstage at Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler, offers us surefire tips on how to work a natural eyeliner with a modern touch.

Cleaning Lady

Dip a cotton swab in makeup remover and trace it along the line until you get the shape and look that you want, suggests Aharon.

Clear Lines

A more graphic or 60s look is easily created with a liquid liner, which tends to stay on longer, says Aharon. Applying liquid eyeliner to the natural lash line works on everyone. Use a flat brush and wiggle it at the base of the lashes, tracing it from outer to inner corner.

Pencil Pal

A black or coloured pencil is great for creating a smokey eye. I like the softer, smudgy looks on runways this spring. It has a sexy but undone effect, says Aharon, noting colour and metallics as big trends. Pencil is easy to smudge with your fingers, a cotton swab, or a brush, or combine with a coloured eye shadow for different looks. You can also use it to line the inner rim of the eye for a dramatic look.
